I thought I was excellent at communicating. I believed I expressed myself clearly and effectively, but life has a way of humbling us and revealing opportunities for growth. It's taken me years to realize that I might not be the best communicator, especially in emotionally charged situations. However, I've reached a point in life where I would rather identify my flaws in order to build deeper connections.
This realization was hard to accept, but it has also been freeing. Communication is a skill — a dynamic one that can be continuously improved. Everyone communicates differently and that’s something we must keep in mind. To become a better communicator, we must learn how to adapt to others’ styles while staying authentic to your own.
The Power of Communication
Communication is more than just exchanging words; it’s the cornerstone of expressing yourself and building strong, lasting relationships. Mastering emotional intelligence (EQ) is imperative to decipher when others just want to share without receiving feedback or when others are uncomfortable sharing so you're capable of pivoting the conversation.
Communication is not just about speaking but also about listening — not just hearing someone’s words, but truly understanding others' feelings, intentions and perspectives. You'll create an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect where you create a calming and nurturing environment that allows for meaningful harmonious connections.

Thoughtful Questions to Deepen Connections
One key to building long-lasting friendships and meaningful connections is asking deeper questions to show interest and learn more meaningful insights about others. Instead of sticking to surface-level inquiries like “How are you doing?” or “What’s up?”, dive into topics that help you understand someone on a more profound level. Here are some examples:
Manifestation and Dreams:
What’s something you’ve accomplished that you’re really proud of?
What's something you're passionate about right now?
Family and Connection:
What’s one tradition or value your family has that’s really important to you?
What's something you're looking forward to with or when you start your own family?
Exploration and Interests:
If you could spend a day doing something that feeds your soul, what would it be?
What’s one book or idea you’ve come across recently that really inspired you?
Future Plans:
What’s something exciting you’re looking forward to?
What's been inspiring you lately?
These types of questions show genuine curiosity and a desire to learn about the other person on a deeper level. They’re not just conversation starters; they’re bridges to understanding and intimacy.
Listening to Understand, Not Just to Respond
Another critical aspect of communication is mastering the art of listening. It’s easy to fall into the trap of listening just to reply but true connection comes when you listen to understand. This means being present in the moment, asking follow-up questions and reflecting on what’s being shared instead of planning your next comment without judgement so the other person feels valued and understood.
My Journey to Better Communication
Looking back, I realize that my struggles with communication weren’t just about how I expressed myself but also about how I listened. Over time, I’ve learned that the most impactful conversations are the ones where both people feel seen, heard, and valued. Therefore, reaching a balance in listening and sharing my own experiences and thoughts has allowed for conversations to flow easily and help me create spaces for deeper connections. Now, I’m making it a priority to build my communication skills and foster relationships — whether romantic or platonic — that are rooted in mutual respect and understanding.
I patiently listen without interrupting and embrace moments of silence because this shows respect and emotional intelligence as well as creates an environment where others feel at ease. I also choose kind and thoughtful words carefully to uplift rather than tear down. Our words and gestures have the power to create a powerful and lasting impact.
Building Long-Lasting Friendships
Strong friendships and relationships aren’t built overnight; they take time, patience, and consistent effort. By asking meaningful questions, actively listening, and understanding different communication styles, you create a foundation for deeper connections. Communication isn’t just a tool; it’s the key to nurturing bonds that can withstand the test of time.
If you’re on a similar journey, remember that it’s okay to stumble and learn as you go. Communication is an art, and like any art, it takes practice. But the rewards — more meaningful connections, stronger relationships, and a better understanding of yourself and others — are absolutely worth it.
